An Experiment in Denver

Denver Community Church (DCC) has experienced a new level of depth in its engagement with the city of Denver over the past few years. In its seventeen-year history, it has been guided by its vision of following Jesus, journeying together, and demonstrating God’s love to all people. At times that work has led in surprising and unexpected directions, challenging and stretching their theological frameworks.

It is out of this mix of growth and challenge and recognition of the need for ongoing theological formation that DCC began exploring the possibility of partnering with Newbigin House of Studies (NHS).

In the coming year, DCC will send four students to the Newbigin Year program, a pre-seminary year of learning that qualifies students for advanced standing at our partner seminaries. In addition to going through a curriculum of missional theological formation with other NHS students from across the country, they will work as resident interns at DCC. This combination of theological education and local ministry engagement is an excellent example of how both DCC and NHS value the integration of theological learning with wise praxis.

Dave Neuhausel, DCC’s Pastor of Mobilization, has great hopes for this residency program: “We are very much anticipating how this partnership with Newbigin House will both enrich the lives and calling of these interns, and also bring an enriched theological vision back to our staff and church community. I think our entire community will benefit from this investment!”

In addition, DCC will send two of their current staff members to the Ministry Fellowship at Newbigin House, a new program in continuing education for pastoral leaders. Their involvement will provide another layer of interaction (between staff and students and also across cities and institutions).

For Scot Sherman, Executive Director, this new relationship is an example of the kind of work that lies at the heart of the vision at Newbigin House: “One of our highest priorities is working toward the common good by bringing the church and the academy closer together. This new partnership with DCC represents an exciting forward step in our mission.”
